Yala National Park

About the Day Tour

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most celebrated wildlife reserve and for good reason. Covering 979 square kilometres of dry-zone scrub forest, lagoons, and rocky outcrops that tumble to the sea, Yala harbours one of the highest leopard densities in the world, making it the finest place on earth to observe Sri Lanka’s apex predator in the wild. Morning and afternoon jeep safaris sweep through the park’s blocks, where experienced trackers read the bush for fresh pugmarks, alarm calls from sambar deer, and the rustle of a spotted coat in the undergrowth. Beyond leopards, Yala is teeming with life: large herds of Sri Lanka’s endemic elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles patrolling the lagoon margins, striped jackals, and over 200 bird species, including the spectacular painted stork and lesser flamingo. The landscape itself, ancient rock temples, ruined dagobas and coastline lashed by the Indian Ocean, adds a haunting beauty to every game drive.
